We are situated on the edge of the Massif Centrale at about 400m above sea level
in the area known locally as the Bouriane. An area of parklands & outstanding
natural beauty. The region known as La Bouriane extends from Gourdon to the Lot
Valley from Cahors to Puy L’Eveque West of the N20 (D820). It is a region where the
limestone formation disappears under a bed of sandstone , which is a lovely red
and ochre colour. This soil allows the cultivation of chestnut, pine and walnut
trees. There are vineyards on slopes with southern aspects. A great number of
rivers carve through the plateau creating a hilly, mixed forest and wooded
countryside scattered with farms and wildlife, deer and boar. The Quercy
national park is to the East containing the picturesque Célé valley with its
unique attractions. There are an abundance of local walks/cycling trails.
Les Huguets houses the village bakery, a few minutes stroll from the house.
The village of Frayssinet is 4km North and has a garage and a small
shop-restaurant-bar.
Picturesque St. Germain du Bel Air is 3km West and slightly larger. It has
police, doctor, dentist, pharmacy, post office, bakery, Spar grocer, hairdresser, restaurant
& a Sunday Farmers Market. The larger still village of Labastide-Murat is 8km away NE and has
similar facilities together with a bank, supermarket, a variety of small shops with a
fortnightly Monday morning market. The hill top town of Gourdon is 15km NW and
has full commerces, restaurants, large supermarkets etc. Saturday market and a fornightly
Tuesday 'foire'. The walled city of Cahors is 25km South. It has both Wednesday &
Sunday markets , superstores & full commerces.
From June - September it is usually very hot here (25C - 40C) and the shaded
verandas are very welcome. The water quality here is excellent as all the water
in the house passes through a triple filtration system, Particulate, Hardness
and Carbon. The fridge/freezer in the main kitchen supplies endless ice & cold
water. The house & chalet have 3 bio-degrader tanks & field drainage
systems for waste water and sanitary disposal. Unlike UK systems it uses common
pipes. All sinks have plugs, please be sure to close them after use ... to
avoid smells washing back into the room! The system is trouble free. Please do
not dispose of any non-biodegradable solids through the sink or toilet. Certain
items notably coffee grounds, non-soluble powders & grease/fat will kill the
bacteria in the system. The bacteria are needed to keep it healthy & smell free
and are topped up on a weekly basis. If in doubt please dispose of items in the
plastic sacks provided.
When replacing washing/cleaning liquid & powders please make sure they are
biodegradable, most sold here are OK.
Normal household rubbish is disposed of in tied plastic sacks in the rubbish
bins at Le Treil Haut.
For recycling ... there are 2 categories
Glass ... there is a special glass disposal point in Frayssinet village.
Cardboard, paper, plastics & all metals ... are disposed of loose in the
green recycling bin at Le Treil Haut.
There is a 220V electrical system with 3 pin round continental plugs which is
earth trip switch protected. Adapters are available to convert UK plugs.
Please note and take care over the proximity of water and electrical outlets in
bathrooms & kitchens. The Chalet has its own washing machine.
A washing machine and dryer are also available in the cellar of the main house
which also contains a modern oil burning heating/hot water system
You are free to use the swimming pool whenever you wish. It has a sliding,
lockable, cover and has 20C+ temperatures (see graph in pool section) between April and November.
Please make sure the pool is
secured after use.
